BrainHex is a model that helps you understand what type of video game player you are. It was created in 2010 and has undergone several years of research since then. Its core idea is to combine neurobiological insights with earlier player typologies (such as Bartle’s, which we have adapted and which you can complete on our website!) and with literature on emotions. The original BrainHex model divided players into seven types based on their gaming motivation.
However, the authors themselves present the model more as a hypothetical concept. The player types are derived from theoretical foundations but have not been empirically validated (the authors did not conduct any research to confirm the concept). Over the following years, several researchers attempted to modify the model, resulting in multiple versions with different numbers of player types. To date, however, no version has been fully validated - let alone translated into Czech.
We therefore decided to create our own version of the model. We compiled a set of items that appeared across multiple versions of the questionnaire, adjusted their format, and translated them into Czech. At this stage, we are collecting data to examine whether the player types proposed in 2010 actually exist and correspond to real player behavior. Or perhaps we will discover something entirely different…?
