BrainHex is a model that helps you understand what type of video game player you are. It was created in 2010 and has undergone several years of research since then. Its core idea is to combine neurobiological insights with earlier player typologies (such as Bartle’s, which we have adapted and which you can complete on our website!) and with literature on emotions. The original BrainHex model divided players into seven types based on their gaming motivation.

However, the authors themselves present the model more as a hypothetical concept. The player types are derived from theoretical foundations but have not been empirically validated (the authors did not conduct any research to confirm the concept). Over the following years, several researchers attempted to modify the model, resulting in multiple versions with different numbers of player types. To date, however, no version has been fully validated - let alone translated into Czech.

We therefore decided to create our own version of the model. We compiled a set of items that appeared across multiple versions of the questionnaire, adjusted their format, and translated them into Czech. At this stage, we are collecting data to examine whether the player types proposed in 2010 actually exist and correspond to real player behavior. Or perhaps we will discover something entirely different…?

Seeker

The Seeker is motivated by an interest mechanism linked to brain areas responsible for processing sensory information and episodic memory. When they encounter something that fascinates them sufficiently and sparks curiosity, their brain releases a substantial dose of endorphins - the so-called “happiness hormone.” Seekers are curious by nature; they want to explore the game world and uncover all of its secrets. It is therefore no surprise that they prefer open-world games, which they enjoy traversing in every direction.

Survivor

For some people, fear is a negative emotion; others actively enjoy it. These are the Survivors, who love feelings of fear, dread, and terror. From a neurological perspective, this experience is driven by epinephrine, or adrenaline - a chemical substance released during moments of excitement or fear. What do Survivors enjoy about games? They like being scared and thrive on terror, for example when fleeing from a terrifying monster. At the same time, they also love the feeling of relief and victory that comes when they successfully escape virtual danger.

Daredevil

Daredevils are a bit like action movie heroes - constantly balancing on the edge between life and death. They love excitement, dive headfirst into situations, and do not think too much about their actions. They do not strategize; they play spontaneously, without considering the consequences of their behavior. It is precisely this risk-taking, characteristic of their fast-paced play style, that brings them a sense of pleasure and satisfaction - whether it is high-speed driving through the streets of a fictional city or a direct assault on an enemy base. Daredevils live for fast, impulsive action.

Mastermind

Masterminds are interested in one thing only: solving every problem, every puzzle, and every brainteaser a game has to offer. The more difficult the problem appears, the better. They want to outsmart the game and overcome it through intellect. This is their play style - this is what they seek and enjoy in games. A key component of the Mastermind’s approach is careful planning of strategy and tactics. They strive to find the most ingenious solution and are willing to repeat a single mission twenty times if necessary, until it is executed flawlessly. Their goal is to have the best possible plan and carry it out perfectly, even if it takes ages.

Conqueror

Conquerors are not satisfied with easily earned victories. They seek challenges and want to face the toughest obstacles. They look for the strongest enemies and powerful, hard-to-defeat monsters. For Conquerors, there is no challenge that cannot be overcome, no matter how insurmountable it may seem. They will repeatedly attempt to defeat every boss - no matter how insignificant or unnecessary for game progression - even if it takes an entire day. Nothing compares to the feeling of finally defeating an enemy. They channel their anger and frustration on the path to victory.

Socialiser

Humans are social beings, and interaction with other players is a crucial aspect for Socialisers. They thrive when they can spend time with others - chatting, going on quests, and sharing adventures together. They enjoy helping others and strongly dislike it when someone takes advantage of their kindness. Socialisers tend to trust and rely on other members of the gaming community.

Achiever

Achievers are a highly goal-oriented type of player. They focus on reaching various objectives and in-game milestones and are motivated by the prospect of long-term success. Their play style resembles checking items off a to-do list. Everything they have already completed, discovered, or achieved is mentally crossed off their personal game plan. Every game must be finished to 100%. Main story, side quests, collectibles, or challenges - for Achievers, it is essential to complete everything and to have the most of everything.
